Happy New Year
As we celebrate the arrival of a new year, now is an appropriate time to look back at the historic and tremendously successful year we had in 2016 punctuated by electing Donald Trump as our next President of the United States.
The Republican primary election on March 8th gave us incredible energy going into the April precinct caucuses and county conventions, where we had record participation, with 77 of 82 counties holding Republican conventions. In May we had our State Convention in Jackson which was a tremendous success by all accounts, thanks to many of you who were very involved in the planning and conduct of the Convention. Chairman Joe Nosef was re-elected to serve as Chairman of the Mississippi Republican Party for the next four years, and Henry Barbour and Jeannie Luckey were both re-elected to serve as our National Committeeman and National Committeewoman.
In July, delegates and guests from Mississippi went to the National Convention in Cleveland where we had one of the most unified and energetic delegations in the entire country. Our delegation, following the example of Governor Bryant, immediately rallied behind Donald Trump once it became clear he was going to be the Republican nominee. Donald Trump visited the Magnolia State three times to hold rallies prior to Election Day.
And of course November 8th was truly an incredible night as we witnessed Donald Trump and the Republican Party shock the world with a historic victory. We won back the White House, retained control of both houses of Congress, grew our super majorities in governor’s mansions across the country, and expanded Republican control of state legislative chambers in every corner of America.
Donald Trump won Mississippi by a landslide, but we also lived up to our reputation as being one of the best Republican parties in the country. Governor Bryant served as a super-surrogate for now President-elect Trump, traveling to many important states at the request of the campaign. Volunteers here in Mississippi campaigned in battleground states for Donald Trump in the days leading up to the election led by our National Committeewoman Jeanne Luckey who did an outstanding job.
Next year here in Mississippi we have municipal elections. With our success at the national level this year and at the state level last year, Republicans go into municipal elections with phenomenal momentum. The Mississippi Republican Party finds itself at the end of 2016 in the strongest position it has ever been, and that’s because of you and the work you do. Let us work together to build on our successes of years past, and embrace the promising opportunities that lie ahead for us in the year to come.
Thank you for your support and dedication to making America great. Happy New Year to you and yours, and may God bless our great state and country in 2017.
