MSGOP Spotlights Ellen Jernigan
Ellen Jernigan began her involvement in the Republican Party in 1990. Shortly after joining the newly formed Republican Women’s Club in DeSoto County, the club received a visit from the beloved Evelyn McPhail, the state GOP chair and Executive Director at the time. Evelyn shared many ideas and offered encouragement to the women to strengthen and grow their club, and become more involved with the state party.
Evelyn was the nuts and bolts leader, and during this time, she became Ellen’s mentor. Evelyn encouraged Ellen to get involved in local politics which has resulted in her longtime involvement as a leader and loyal activist. Ellen became a candidate for Alderman in her hometown of Hernando in 1993. Following her initial victory, she served 3 terms, instilling term limits on her tenure.
Over the past 28 years, Ellen has had the honor of serving as chairman of several campaigns. From assisting Governor Kirk Fordice in 1993, to most recently serving as the DeSoto County chairman for President Donald Trump in 2016, it is evident that politics is her passion. Not only is she an active member of the Mississippi Republican Party (MSGOP) State Executive Committee, but she currently serves as the MSGOP Secretary as well as the chair of the United Republican Fund (URF). “I volunteered to serve as the URF Chairman because I believe there is no better or easier way to support the one organization that works every single day preparing for our future and defending our gains,” said Jernigan. “For only $20 a month, you can also do your part.”
Through years of dedication and service to the GOP, Ellen has had the privilege of participating in eight Republican National Conventions, and continues to have an invaluable role in the Mississippi Federation of Republican Women as well as the state GOP. “She has a genuine interest in her community and is dedicated to the Republican Party and its values,” said Kim Remak, a fellow Republican and resident of DeSoto County. “Ellen values all people and works to encourage the skills and talents of others. She is a loyal friend to Republican politics.”
