Philip Gunn Elected Speaker of the House

Earlier today Rep. Philip Gunn (R-Clinton) was elected Speaker of the House becoming the first Republican to hold this position since Reconstruction. His colleagues in the 122-member House elected Gunn unanimously after Rep. George Flaggs (D-Vicksburg) made a motion to elect the Republican by acclamation.

Gunn is in his third term representing parts of Hinds, Madison, Warren, and Yazoo counties. You can find more information on Gunn at either his Speaker’s website or Facebook page.

Also in the House, Rep, Greg Snowden (R-Meridian) was elected to serve as Speaker Pro Temp, without opposition. Snowden is a fourth term lawmaker representing parts of Clarke and Lauderdale counties.

And in the Senate, Sen. Terry Brown (R-Columbus) was chosen to serve as President Pro Temp of the Senate. The Lowndes county lawmaker served four terms in the House and has been in the Senate since 2004.
